Double Cross
Acrylic on canvas, 2025
The red and yellow paint on each canvas is the same, but on the left they read as transparent, and on the right as solid. This visual dynamic unfolds as a kind of double cross where each side is undoing the other.
Displayed August/September, 2025, at Aigantighe Gallery, Timaru, as part of the “Scripted” group exhibition. In private collection.
Transparency #1
Acrylic on canvas, 2024
An experiment with colour, balance and transparency.
In private collection.
Andreas, out of ashes
Acrylic on canvas, 2025
A balance of colour and form, reflecting in paint a friend’s personal triumph over adversity.
In private collection.
Kia kaha, Kahikatea
Acrylic on canvas, 2023
I conceived this painting as a type of perceptual abstraction – I am painting in the space of your perceptions. What is essentially a static picture quickly becomes dynamic – by this I mean it is an experience that unfolds as it holds your eye. Ambiguity of relationship is key here creating a pulsation or progression of changing relationships.
Donated to and installed at Kensington in-patient unit, in Timaru, in recognition of the care I received there.
Deeply drippy #1
Acrylic on canvas, 2025
An experiment combining drips in a range of directions (to negate how orientation is read – this is not a vertical surface) and geometric abstraction.
On display at Gallery 329, Timaru. For sale.
Clash of the titans
Acrylic on canvas, 2023
An attempt to balance complementary colours through tone and form.
In private collection.
Supernova
Acrylic on canvas, 2025
An experiment combining geometric abstraction with a more expressive brush stroke within forms. A kind of hybrid.
On display at Gallery 329, Timaru. For sale.
The shadow of the cross
Acrylic on canvas, 2025
The space between the 4 canvases forms a cross, which casts a shadow upon them. What appears to be 4 austere abstractions is actually 1 figurative painting. Here I am eluding to the dark history of the church and the shadow it has cast on our history. The link below goes to the poem that was displayed with this painting:
Displayed August/September, 2025, at Aigantighe Gallery, Timaru, as part of the “Scripted” group exhibition. For sale NZ$700.
Abstract butterfly (effect)
Acrylic on canvas, 2025
One painting, two canvases. The formal relationships here are in operation across the wall. I have tried to capture the effect of a butterfly fluttering. Do you think I succeeded?
Displayed August/September, 2025, at Aigantighe Gallery, Timaru, as part of the “Scripted” group exhibition. For sale NZ$700.
Minority
Acrylic on canvas, 2025
Obviously influenced by Gordon Walters’ Koru paintings. An attempt to bring black and white forward in unison.
On display at Gallery 329, Timaru. For sale.
